Airbnb CEO Chesky Shifts Strategy, Adds Hotels, Cars and AI Services
Airbnb broadened bookings to include hotels, car rentals and AI-driven features ahead of the World Cup, expecting record usage across the platform.

Airbnb Inc. (ABNB) announced a strategic product expansion under CEO Brian Chesky that adds hotel bookings, car rentals, airport transfers and new AI-enabled features to its core home-rental marketplace, positioning the app as a broader travel services platform.
The company’s May release introduces boutique hotels and car-rental options directly in the Airbnb app, along with incentives such as credits for selected hotel bookings. Chesky noted the company’s roadmap emphasizes using machine learning to improve discovery and automate a greater share of customer support tasks, aiming to make the service feel more like a full-service travel agent than a search engine.
The timing aligns with expectations for heightened travel demand around the 2026 FIFA World Cup. While some hotel operators have reported bookings below early forecasts in several U.S. host cities, Airbnb projects that guest bookings for the tournament could surpass previous large events and is rolling out World Cup-themed experiences and services to capture fan demand.
From a market perspective, the product diversification could boost Airbnb’s revenue mix by generating higher-margin services revenue alongside traditional host commissions. However, uneven hotel demand across host cities may create regional pricing and occupancy volatility, which investors will monitor as a test of the company’s ability to monetize services at scale.
Analysts say successful execution depends on deep integrations with hotel and car partners, regulatory compliance across jurisdictions, and the effective deployment of AI to lower support costs while improving user conversion. Upcoming quarterly results and World Cup booking patterns will be key indicators of whether Airbnb’s expanded offering translates into sustainable growth for ABNB.
