AI Infrastructure Requires $6.7 Trillion Investment by 2030 Amid Compute Shortage

McKinsey projects that AI-related data center infrastructure will require approximately $6.7 trillion in capital investment by 2030. This massive spending reflects enterprises' urgent demand for AI capabilities, despite current limitations in compute power, energy, and hosting capacity.
The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies is creating a significant global "compute" shortage, as the physical infrastructure required to support these innovations struggles to keep pace. According to analyses by the management consulting firm McKinsey, approximately $6.7 trillion in colossal capital investment will be needed for AI-related data center infrastructure by 2030. Of this total, $5.2 trillion is specifically earmarked for AI-related capacity expansion.
This situation presents a critical bottleneck threatening the next phase of AI's growth. Global data center capacity is projected to nearly triple by 2030, with approximately 70% of this demand driven by AI workloads. While traditional data centers require 5-10 megawatts of power, an AI-optimized data center needs 20-30 megawatts, putting immense pressure on energy infrastructure. Goldman Sachs forecasts AI capital expenditures could reach $7.6 trillion between 2026 and 2031, while JPMorgan Chase estimates global AI-related capital expenditure will climb to $5.5 trillion by 2030.
According to McKinsey's breakdown of the $5.2 trillion AI-specific investment, a substantial portion of the capital will be allocated to technology developers and designers. Chip manufacturers and IT suppliers will require approximately $3.1 trillion in investment during this period. Energizers, including utilities and cooling system providers, will account for $1.3 trillion, and data center builders (real estate developers and construction companies) will invest around $800 billion. These figures indicate an unprecedented expansion across every layer of the AI ecosystem.
This immense wave of investment creates significant opportunities for companies operating in semiconductors, data center development, cooling systems, and power infrastructure. Chipmakers like NVIDIA (NASDAQ: NVDA) are positioned as key suppliers in this growth. Hyperscale cloud providers such as Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft, and Meta are leading these infrastructure investments. Furthermore, private market financing is playing an increasingly crucial role in meeting this colossal funding requirement.
The compute shortage represents a fundamental impediment to AI adoption across various industries. Power constraints, in particular, stand out as a critical bottleneck in data center construction. Long infrastructure project timelines, a shortage of skilled labor, and challenges in permitting processes also contribute to investors' hesitation to commit to full-scale investments. This is considered one of the biggest obstacles to AI technology fully realizing its potential.
Analysts and market expectations suggest that the demand for AI compute power will continue to outstrip supply in the coming years. This creates sustained demand for infrastructure investments but also carries risks of over- or under-investment. Experts emphasize the need for companies to accurately forecast future demand curves and prudently allocate capital. Some market leaders, such as BlackRock CEO Larry Fink, even anticipate the emergence of futures markets for compute power, indicating its evolving status as a new commodity class.
