The rapid ascent of artificial intelligence (AI) is fundamentally reshaping competitive dynamics in the global business landscape. Alexandr Wang, founder of Scale AI and head of Meta's Superintelligence Labs, stated at a Y Combinator event that AI agents have transformed the 'David versus Goliath' scenario for startups into a 'Goliath versus Goliath' fight. Wang suggested that startups ambitiously embracing AI agents can now easily outperform established incumbent companies.

Wang noted that when he founded Scale AI, an AI data labeling company, in 2016, the market structure was vastly different. Back then, like David against Goliath, startups with limited resources had to be clever in developing strategies to find their niche in the market. However, with the power of AI agents today, this situation has changed. AI agents are software systems capable of autonomously completing multi-step tasks such as writing code or handling customer support. Wang joined Meta in June 2025 as part of a $14.3 billion deal, taking the helm of Superintelligence Labs.

This technological shift is leading to a significant transformation in market mechanisms. Advantages now stem not solely from a company's size or scale, but from the efficiency of models, workflows, and agent systems. Teams capable of quickly integrating AI agents into their products are benefiting, while incumbent companies relying on human labor for scaling are facing pressure. Wang highlighted that a properly designed agentic system at Meta successfully accomplished more than a team of 100 engineers.

This development, as echoed by other prominent figures in Silicon Valley, presents a unique opportunity for civilization. Wang described it as "probably a once in a civilization opportunity to be a dreamer and to have a vision and to have ambition and to impose a view of how the future world should look by building something amazing." In this new era, he predicts that the scarce resource will not be intelligence or agency, but rather vision and ambition.

Analysts and market observers anticipate that AI's transformative impact on the business world will deepen further in the coming years. Wang outlined four waves of AI opportunity, each roughly ten times larger than the last: self-driving cars, chatbots powered by large language models, coding agents, and agentic loops that optimize entire business processes. This indicates a dynamic and rapidly evolving market environment, particularly in the technology and finance sectors, where innovative startups can directly compete with major players.
