While artificial intelligence technologies currently constitute one of the biggest investment themes in markets, Sandy Kaul, Head of Digital Assets and Innovation at Franklin Templeton, and Jeremy Allaire, CEO of Circle, suggest that the next major investment opportunity could emerge within the crypto and blockchain ecosystem. Kaul and Allaire argue that as autonomous AI agents begin to perform financial transactions independently, blockchain networks will form the backbone of this new economic era. This indicates a potential shift in market focus from AI chipmakers and cloud service providers to the underlying infrastructures that will power machine-to-machine commerce.

To date, AI investments have largely concentrated on semiconductor companies and hyperscale cloud providers. However, Kaul states that investors may be overlooking this new wave, referred to as "agentic AI." Unlike generative AI, which creates text or images, agentic AI is designed to complete complex tasks with minimal human input. These autonomous AI agents will engage in economic activities such as purchasing data, leasing computing power, or striking deals with other AI agents. Traditional financial systems are not adequately equipped to efficiently manage billions of such microtransactions.

Jeremy Allaire notes that AI is driving the cost of knowledge work towards zero, while blockchain and programmable digital money are doing the same for payments, settlement, and coordination. Allaire's "Agentic Economy" thesis emphasizes that AI and blockchain are not two separate trends but rather integral parts of a single technological transformation. In this vision, blockchain networks, and particularly full-reserve-backed stablecoins (such as USDC), will provide the necessary financial infrastructure for AI agents to conduct secure, programmable, and instant transactions. Circle is pioneering this field by developing tools like the "Agent Stack," which enables AI agents to autonomously hold and transact digital assets.

This development could increase demand for blockchain networks in tandem with AI adoption. As agents require native cryptocurrencies to pay network fees, rising transaction volumes could lead to increased demand for these tokens. This, in turn, could generate more revenue for developer incentives, network security, and decentralized applications. Autonomous AI agents have already settled millions of dollars on-chain through blockchain networks, demonstrating the practical applicability of the technology.

This technological convergence has the potential to reshape corporate operations, labor markets, payment systems, and global finance. According to Allaire, AI provides machine-level intelligence for economic activity, while blockchain offers the trust, identity, and settlement infrastructure that allows autonomous agents to transact and coordinate globally, making these two technologies complementary. Major asset managers like Franklin Templeton are also expanding their expertise and strategies in this area, recognizing digital assets as a key pillar in the future of investing.

Analysts and market expectations suggest that billions of AI agents could become involved in real-economy work in the coming period. This projected growth could trigger a significant uplift in the crypto and blockchain sectors. Investors who adopt this new paradigm early may find opportunities to benefit from the economic transformation brought about by AI. Stablecoins are expected to become the primary currency for machine-to-machine commerce, with blockchain playing a central role in this process.
