AECOM Selected for New Lisbon Airport Design
Global infrastructure leader AECOM (NYSE:ACM) has been chosen to deliver the preliminary design for Portugal's New Lisbon Airport (Luís de Camões Airport). This project aims to address capacity limitations of the existing airport and catalyze regional economic growth.
AECOM (NYSE:ACM), a prominent global infrastructure leader, has announced its selection to provide preliminary design services for the New Lisbon Airport (Luís de Camões Airport), poised to become a world-class international hub for Portugal's capital city. This significant development addresses the limited expansion potential of the existing Humberto Delgado Airport and represents a strategic move to meet Portugal's growing aviation demand.
The selection by ANA Aeroportos de Portugal S.A., part of the VINCI Airports group, will see AECOM leading the initial phase of design development in collaboration with local Portuguese partners. The new airport site is located in the municipalities of Benavente and Montijo, partially occupying the existing Alcochete firing range, across the Tagus River from Lisbon. The planned facility is expected to commence operations with an initial capacity of 56 million passengers annually, featuring two runways, 120 aircraft stands, and approximately 500,000 square meters of terminal space. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2029, with completion in 2033 and an operational opening targeted for 2035. The total investment cost for the project is estimated to be between €7.9 billion and €8.9 billion.
This substantial infrastructure investment marks a pivotal moment for Portugal's aviation sector, holding significant potential to boost the country's tourism revenues. AECOM's involvement underscores its robust expertise and extensive experience within the global aviation industry. The company boasts a proven track record, having contributed to major projects such as Boston Logan International Airport and Jorge Chavez International Airport in Lima. Large-scale projects of this nature typically have a positive impact on the financial statements of engineering and design firms like AECOM, contributing to their long-term growth strategies.
The New Lisbon Airport project is an integral part of Portugal's broader efforts to strengthen its global connectivity and foster economic development. By alleviating congestion at the current airport, the project aims to enhance the passenger experience and provide airlines with greater operational flexibility. Furthermore, the new airport is designed for integration with other transportation infrastructures, including a high-speed rail network and new road links, which will significantly improve Portugal's intermodal transport capabilities. Environmental impact assessments are also a crucial component of the project, with a strong focus on adhering to sustainability standards.
Market analysts anticipate that the Luís de Camões Airport will exert a long-term positive influence on the Portuguese economy. The projected increase in passenger traffic following the airport's opening is expected to revitalize the tourism sector and generate new employment opportunities. For firms involved in the project, such as AECOM, these contracts are vital for future revenue streams and enhancing their reputation. As the detailed design and architectural phases commence, the transformation of Portugal's aviation infrastructure is expected to accelerate.
