Absci Shares Tumble on Q2 Earnings and Revenue Miss
Absci Corporation (NASDAQ: ABSI), an AI-powered biopharmaceutical company, saw its shares decline significantly after reporting second-quarter financial results that missed analyst estimates. The company's revenue and earnings per share fell short of expectations, disappointing investors.
Absci Corporation (NASDAQ: ABSI), a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company leveraging generative artificial intelligence, experienced a notable drop in its stock price during after-hours trading following the release of its second-quarter 2026 financial results. The company reported both earnings and revenue figures that fell considerably short of analyst consensus estimates, leading to investor disappointment and a recalibration of expectations for the stock.
For the quarter ended June 30, 2026, Absci posted an adjusted loss of $0.21 per share, which was wider than the analyst consensus estimate of a $0.19 per share loss. Revenue came in at a mere $300,000, significantly below the consensus estimate of $1.01 million. This represented a 50% year-over-year decline from the $600,000 reported in the same quarter last year. Analysts had anticipated a sequential revenue surge of over 340% from the first quarter's $215,000, making the actual results even more impactful.
The company's net loss also widened to $33.2 million for the quarter, compared to a net loss of $30.6 million in the year-ago period. Research and development (R&D) expenses increased to $22.6 million from $20.5 million year-over-year, primarily driven by the advancement of internal programs, including the clinical development of ABS-201. Selling, general, and administrative (SG&A) expenses also rose to $9.2 million from $8.5 million.
Despite the financial shortfalls, Absci highlighted positive interim Phase 1 data from its HEADLINE trial for ABS-201, an antibody targeting the prolactin receptor. The study drug was reported to be well-tolerated and exhibited a favorable safety profile. Furthermore, the company strengthened its balance sheet, with cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities totaling $201.1 million as of June 30, 2026. This includes $93.6 million in net proceeds from a $100 million underwritten offering completed in June, which featured a $40 million strategic investment from Eli Lilly & Company. Absci stated that this cash position is sufficient to fund operations into the second half of 2028.
Sean McClain, Founder and CEO of Absci, expressed confidence in the company's future, citing the positive Phase 1 interim data and strengthened balance sheet. Absci anticipates reporting interim proof-of-concept data for pattern hair loss in the second half of 2026 and full 26-week readout in early 2027. The company also plans to initiate a Phase 2 clinical trial for endometriosis in the fourth quarter of 2026.
The market reaction saw Absci shares decline by 12.5% to 16.6% in after-hours trading. This comes after the stock had rallied sharply in preceding months. While analysts generally maintain a bullish outlook on the early-stage biotech firm, with a mean price target of $13.78, the latest earnings report has prompted investors to reassess the company's valuation, especially given its partnership-driven and often lumpy revenue stream.
